What is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping Therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. People get it for many purposes, including to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage.
Cupping is often recommended as a complementary therapy for the following conditions:
- Back pain
- Headache or migraine
- Knee pain
- Muscle pain and soreness
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Sports injuries
Cupping therapy is a form of traditional medicine that originated in China and West Asia and has been practiced for thousands of years. This therapy involves placing cups on the skin to create suction (aka myofascial decompression). This suction is thought to improve the flow of energy in the body, release toxins and facilitate healing.
Some benefits of cupping therapy:
Some benefits of cupping therapy include the loosening of adhesions and revitalization of connective tissue, increased blood flow to the skin and muscles, and stimulation of the peripheral nervous system. Cupping may also reduce pain, reduce inflammation and release toxins to help with immune system function.
Cupping is $10 in our Pasadena studio when you add-on to a massage
Cupping is performed by one of our massage therapists who places cups on your back, stomach, arms, legs or other parts of your body. A vacuum or suction force inside the cup pulls your skin upward.
Will there be marks on my skin and how long do they last?
Because cupping brings blood to the skin’s surface, it may cause temporary marks on the skin, similar to bruises, but do not be alarmed. The marks left behind also indicate the condition of the treatment area. If there are no marks or they are light pink, it could mean a lack of blood flow to the area. Darker areas may represent an accumulation of toxins that the cups are helping flush out of your system.
Cupping marks typically disappear between 4 and 10 days. But they may last up to two weeks, the darker the cupping mark, the longer it will take to go away.
Overall, cupping is a great alternative therapy that can be performed on its own or in conjunction with another therapy such as massage. It has many health benefits and has become very popular worldwide.
